Bazhong, a city in Southwest China's Sichuan Province, held a video conference on February 7 to make arrangements on pollution prevention and control and for the building of a national ecological civilization demonstration area.

Building Bazhong into a national eco-system demonstration city is of great significance to its future development since the conservation of ecological civilization will benefit not only this generation but many more to come.

He Ping, deputy secretary of Bazhong Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and vice mayor of Bazhong City, attended the virtual meeting and delivered a speech. Wang Shanping, deputy secretary of the Bazhong Municipal Committee of the CPC, presided over the event.

The city was urged to have a clear understanding of its position concerning the work of eco-system construction, including the relevant requirements, and of its problems and weak links in environmental pollution. It needs to appreciate the opportunities and challenges in green-oriented growth, and to grasp the importance of building ecological civilization.

The city should prioritize the improvement of air quality, enhancement of its capacity for integrated river basin management, prevention and control of soil pollution and solid waste, pollution management in rural areas, and the building of a national ecological civilization demonstration region in an effort to constantly improve its local eco-system.

The meeting stressed that officials who have been found in dereliction of their duties will face harsh punishment in accordance with laws and disciplinary rules.

Attendees also watched a video clip of prominent problems found in previous ecological conservation inspections to further raise their awareness of the importance of the ongoing work.
